The
2003 Belfort Lecture was given by Dr.
Alison Smith Wednesday,
May 14th at the WCCR Belfort Lecture and Technical Conference held
at
Purdue
University
. The title of her
presentation was "A New
View of Starch Metabolism: Synthesis Meets Degradation".
Dr.
Smith received her Ph.D. in Plant Sciences from the
University
of
Cambridge
UK
. She did Postdoctoral
work at the Universities of
Dusseldorf
(
Germany
), Leeds (UK) and East Anglia (UK), until 1982.
In
1982 she joined the staff of the John Innes Centre, a research
institute dedicated to plants and microbes, receiving most of its
funding from the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research
Council. She is
currently the Head of the Department of Metabolic Biology at the
John Innes Centre, and has an honorary Chair in the
School
of
Biological Sciences
,
University
of
East Anglia.
